STAR DREAMING – THE SEVEN SISTERS
This is my interpretation of the Seven Sisters story.
The Star Dreaming story of the Seven Sisters relates to the journey of the seven sisters that make up the star cluster known as the Pleiades in the constellation Taurus. In the Seven Sisters story in Aboriginal Australia, the group of the stars are Napaljarri sisters from one skin group. In the Walpiri story of this Jukurrpa, the sisters are often represented carrying the Jampijinpa man Wardilyka, who is in love with the women. Then the morning star, Jukurra-Jukurra, who is Jakamarra man and who is also in love with the seven Napalijarri sisters is shown chasing them across the sky.
They are seen to be running away, fleeing from the man who wants to take one of the sisters as his wife. However, under traditional law, the man pursing the sisters is the wrong skin group and is forbidden to take a Napaljarri wife. So, the Seven Sisters are running away from the Jampijinpa man, they travel across the land, and then from steep hill they launch themselves into the sky in attempt to escape. But the Jakamarra man follows the sisters into the sky, travelling in the form of a star seen in the Orion’s Belt star cluster, which is also seen as the base of the Big Dipper. So, every night the Seven Sisters launch themselves into the night sky, and every night Jampijinpa man follows after them across the sky.
In Aboriginal Australia the stories associated with the stars and night skies carry meanings which probe deep into the law and culture and social structures of the people. As the artists represent these subjects, they are maintaining the stories and keeping the meaning strong within the group.

Corroboree - Dance
Our local aboriginals were known to perform corroborees at the Serpentine Dam. One of the major purposes for the traditional aboriginal dancing was to tell stories, which were passed down through generations. They could be about the land, animals, dreamtime & aboriginal people. Quite commonly – imitations of animals were performed in assisting the storytelling & bringing the dreamtime to life.

grandpa tree
We were fortunate enough to find an unusual tree in the Serpentine area. This unusually large tree can be found on an old dairy farm – it has been named “GRANDPA TREE” as it is said to be more than over 400 yrs old. We felt very privileged to be invited onto the (now) much smaller farm to meet the tree. It was an awesome experience to see it growing happily at the water’s edge – listening to the old stories the farmer was recalling.
